Intro: If you are an Indian brand selling on Amazon.ae through Amazon Global Selling, the single most useful thing to know before you ship stock is whether your product sits in a gated category. Amazon.ae restricts 32 categories and leaves 20 open, according to its official seller page, and Global Selling sellers face exactly the same gates as UAE-based sellers. This guide translates that list into Indian products, from namkeen and ghee to hair oil, ashwagandha, kurtas and silver jewellery. It also explains what gating and ungating mean, how to apply from India, and the UAE registrations behind each gate. If you have already hit "Apply to sell" and want quick reassurance, start with our Amazon Global Selling UAE category approval FAQ.
What gating and ungating mean on Amazon.ae
A gated category is one Amazon only lets approved sellers list in, usually because the products are eaten, applied to the body, given to babies, or often counterfeited. Ungating is getting that approval. Gated is not banned: restricted products can be sold once you are approved, while prohibited products (most medicines, for example) cannot be sold at all.
Gates sit at four levels, and Seller Central tells you which one you have hit:
- Category gate: the whole category, such as Grocery & Gourmet Food or Watches.
- Sub-category gate: part of an open category. Beauty is open, but Amazon notes that "topicals require approval".
- Brand gate: a specific brand, even in an open category. Seller Central says "You need approval to list in this brand", per Amazon's UAE listing guide.
- Product gate: a single ASIN, usually for safety or authenticity reasons.
Which Indian products are gated on Amazon.ae?
This table maps the products Indian brands most often export to Amazon.ae's official category list, with what the UAE requires behind each gate.
| Your product | Amazon.ae category | Gated? | UAE requirement behind it |

| Ayurvedic capsules, ashwagandha, herbal powders, protein, vitamins | Dietary Supplements; Health & Personal Care | Yes | Montaji or Emirates Drug Establishment registration |
| Hair oil, face packs, ubtan, kajal, makeup, moisturiser, shampoo, soap | Beauty Topicals; Cosmetics & Skin/Hair Care | Yes | Montaji per product; ECAS for many cosmetics |
| Attar and perfume | Beauty (fragrance) | Check; open on the table but often treated as a topical | Montaji; notified bodies list perfumes as an exception to ECAS; perfume usually ships as dangerous goods |
| Baby massage oil, baby food, diapers, baby carriers | Baby Products | Yes | ECAS for baby care products |
| Silver, gold or gemstone jewellery | Jewelry & Precious Gems | Yes | Hallmarking under Federal Law No. 11 of 2015 (secondary sources cite exemptions under 1 g for gold and platinum and under 5 g for silver) |

| Watches | Watches | Yes, all watches | None found |
| Trimmers, hair dryers, LED lights, speakers | Electronics; Lighting | Yes | ECAS (lighting certificates are valid for one year); Arabic and English manuals; lithium batteries restricted on import |

| Toys and board games | Toys & Games | No | ECAS toy conformity |
| Books, including religious texts | Books | Yes | Media content rules |
| Combs, brushes, jade rollers | Beauty Tools & Accessories | No | ECAS if electrical |
The rest of Amazon.ae's restricted list covers Organic Products, Medical Devices, Medication, Hazardous & Dangerous Items, Pesticides, Plants & Seeds, Industrial & Scientific, Automotive, Laser Products, Surveillance Equipment, Music, Video, Subscriptions, collectibles, Fine Art and Postage Stamps.
If you sell jewellery, the fashion-versus-fine line decides far more than the gate, as we explain in selling jewellery in the UAE. Ethnic wear is open, but has its own launch surprises, covered in selling ethnic wear in the UAE.
One known confusion: an Amazon moderator on the UAE forum once listed clothing, shoes and luggage as "common restricted categories", but that thread was about Amazon UK. On Amazon.ae's official table, they are open.
Why Global Selling sellers need a UAE partner for gated categories
Global Selling solves the Amazon side. You register on sell.amazon.in with your IEC, AD code and GST LUT, as set out on Amazon's Global Selling UAE page, and you get paid in rupees, with no UAE company. It does not solve the UAE regulatory side, and for most gated categories the UAE registrations can only be held by a UAE business:
- Food: Dubai Municipality food registration is done by a UAE importer, who submits your label artwork, specifications and shelf life.
- Cosmetics and topicals: Montaji registration needs a UAE trade licence and a company registered with Dubai Municipality.
- Supplements: the federal route needs a licensed medical warehouse to apply, per the Ministry of Health's service page.
- Every FBA shipment: your stock still needs a UAE importer of record to clear customs. Our guide to importers of record and customs duty explains the role.
Your Indian licences (FSSAI, AYUSH, Indian trademark, Amazon.in Brand Registry) support your file. They do not replace any of the above. If Amazon.ae stays closed for your category, here is how Indian brands sell gated food, ayurveda and cosmetics in the UAE anyway.
Global Selling removes the need for a UAE company to sell. It does not remove the need for a UAE company to register what you sell.
How to get ungated on Amazon.ae from India, step by step
- Check every product before you make UAE stock. In UAE Seller Central, go to Catalog, then Add Products, and search your product or a close equivalent. Note the exact button and the "Show limitations" message. If "Apply to sell" appears, open it without submitting and screenshot the requirement, for example "Show the combined purchase of at least 100 units".
- File your UAE trademark. It protects your brand and unlocks Amazon.ae Brand Registry. The UAE gives trademarks to the first applicant.
- Line up a UAE importer who can act as importer of record and hold the product registrations your category needs.
- Get the UAE registration done: Dubai Municipality for food, Montaji for cosmetics, Montaji or the Emirates Drug Establishment for supplements, ECAS for electricals, toys and baby care.
- Fix your labels: Arabic and English, "Made in India", importer details and, for food, nutrition and ingredients. An Indian MRP label on its own will not do.
- Apply once, with a complete file: a genuine GST tax invoice from your manufacturer (or your manufacturing proof if you make it yourself), dated within the last six months or so, with names that match your Global Selling account. No proformas.
- Record the result and re-test monthly. Gates can open, close and differ by account.
Amazon.ae's seller application page notes that restricted categories need a Professional selling plan, so check yours before you apply.
How Amazon.ae compares with Amazon.com and noon for Indian brands
| Indian product | Amazon.ae | Amazon.com | noon UAE |
|---|---|---|---|
| Snacks, spices, ghee, tea | Gated; reported closed | Closed to new ingestible brands since April 2025 | Closed to marketplace sellers; retail only |
| Ayurvedic supplements | Gated | Gated, plus third-party lab verification since April 2024 | Whitelisting with brand, distributor and regulator documents |
| Hair oil, skincare, cosmetics | Gated (topicals) | Sub-category and brand gates | Whitelisting with four documents, including a UAE trade licence |
| Silver and gold jewellery | Gated | 12 months' selling, $50,000 revenue and a $5,000 fee, per sellers and agencies | Open, no certificates needed per noon |
| Watches | Gated | Some restrictions | Open, luxury brands gated |
| Ethnic wear, footwear, home décor | Open | Open | Open |
| Pooja idols and religious books | Books gated; check idols in Seller Central | Check in Seller Central | Religious statues and scriptures prohibited |
Two things stand out for Indian brands. Amazon.com is now stricter than Amazon.ae on anything people eat, so the UAE is not the harder market for food. And noon is looser on jewellery and watches but far stricter on pooja and religious products, which it prohibits outright under its product listing policy. For the wider platform choice, see Amazon.ae vs noon for Indian brands.
